Eraclea, until the remote time, was a shelter and a locality destine to the protection of various population and famous people that occupied this area. This area for a long time was abandon, becoming a fishermen-s town. Then, during the nineteenth century it was drained and after this starts a new expansion, changing its features of marshy ground.
Originally Eraclea was called “Heraclia” in honour of Oriente Eraclio imperator, who prevents the extension of the Longobardo domain in the Venetian Lagoon.
The name Eraclea was find for the first time in an official script which was a document of the Papal States.
The note of the Severino Pope of the 28 May 640 established two new dioceses: Torcello and Eraclea.
The origin of the history of this centre is antique. The little islands that surround the area of the Venetian Lagoon were populated from groups of hunters and fishermen before the Christian Age.
In the eighteen century Eraclea was the biggest city of the estuary. In the centre of Eraclea was built a magnificent cathedral called St. Pietro Apostolo, found by S. Magno and, according to some historian, the population of Eraclea was about 90.000 of habitants.
Eraclea was an important centre of commercial and diplomatic trade with the Bizantin Court and Longobarda di Piave. There were a lot of commercial trade with Orient, in particular with Bisanzio. Eraclea was closely linked with the city of Bisanzio also for politic region.
